Joshua’s Law Explained

Your Roadmap to Legal Driving in Georgia

Joshua’s Law, enacted in 2007, is a crucial piece of legislation designed to enhance the safety of young drivers on Georgia’s roads.

Named in memory of Joshua Brown, a teenager who lost his life in a car accident, this law establishes specific requirements for teens seeking to obtain their driver’s license in the state of Georgia.

Minimum Age Requirement

  • Teens who are at least 15 years old are eligible to start learning how to drive.

1 Year and 1 Day

  • New drivers under 18 must hold their permit for 1 year and 1 day before taking their drivers test. This 1 year is set aside for completing Drivers Ed and practicing to be a safe driver.

Driver’s Education Course

  • Joshua’s Law requires teens who are seeking their initial Class-D drivers license to complete an approved Driver’s Education course in the State of Georgia. Additionally, the law provides insurance discounts for students who complete at least a basic Driver’s Education program that includes a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving.

Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP)

  • Teens must complete Georgia’s ADAP (included in all of our comprehensive packages), which educates young drivers about the dangers of driving under the influence, promoting responsible decision-making on the road.

How to Satisfy Your Student’s Joshua’s Law Requirements

Parents can choose from our various course packages to fulfill their student’s Joshua’s Law requirements.

  • All drivers education packages include the required Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) certificate at no additional charge.

What Sets Us Apart

West Metro’s Core Strengths

Classroom Instruction

Whether you join us in-person or a class via Zoom, our classroom training is informative, impactful, and memorable. Students learn not just how to drive, but the theories behind nationwide driving laws. We incorporate real accident and highway patrol footage to create a strong, lasting impression on students of all ages.

Expert Instructors

Our instructors are highly trained and licensed by the State of Georgia, comprising a diverse team of educators, coaches, counselors, and public safety professionals. Many are active or retired teachers from local schools who have undergone rigorous background checks, training, and licensing to become driving instructors.

Modern, Safe Vehicles

We maintain a fleet of modern, safe, and clean training vehicles, regularly updated to keep pace with the newest technology and safety standards. Each vehicle is equipped with Michelin tires, heavily insured, and meticulously maintained for optimal safety and performance.

Personalized Instructor Feedback

After each behind-the-wheel training appointment, students receive a personalized, detailed report card from their instructor. This evaluation highlights strengths and weaknesses, providing a tailored strategy for at-home practice and continuous improvement.

One-On-One Instruction

All our behind-the-wheel driving appointments are conducted one-on-one with an instructor. This personalized approach ensures focused attention on each student’s needs, avoiding the less effective “group driving” or “round robin” methods used by other driving schools.

Free Local Home Pickup & Drop Off

We offer complimentary local pickup and drop-off for each behind-the-wheel driving appointment. This convenient service covers nearly all of Paulding County, Bartow and West Cobb, making it easier for students to attend their sessions.

Structured Curriculum

Our behind-the-wheel driving sessions follow a carefully designed curriculum with clear training goals. This structured approach allows students to see daily improvement and work steadily towards mastering their road skills.

Efficient Program Completion

West Metro Driving School boasts one of the fastest, most flexible driver training programs in Georgia. With our large team of instructors and 7-day-a-week availability, most of our students complete their training in less than a third of the time of the average school.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

We take pride in our clean, well-maintained facilities that set a higher standard for driving schools. Our dedicated staff and school administration ensure a professional learning environment that enhances the overall educational experience.

Meets All State Requirements

Our school is fully licensed and certified by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Our programs meet or exceed all state requirements, including Joshua’s Law mandates for teen drivers and state-specified curriculum for defensive driving courses. Each of our instructors is state-certified and regularly evaluated to ensure the highest standards of driver education.

Joshua’s Law is a Georgia state law that requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to complete an approved driver’s education course along with behind the wheel training. The law also provides a 10% insurance discount for 3 years as long as the student completes a course that combines 30 hours of classroom training with at least 6 hours of behind the wheel training.

You can start a driver’s education course as early as age 14, but you must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s permit.

Our state-approved course includes 30 hours of classroom or online instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. The classroom portion can typically be completed in 1-2 weeks, while the behind-the-wheel training is scheduled at your convenience.

Our courses can be taken in-person at the school or from home using the tele-classroom through Zoom or WebEx. The behind the wheel training includes free local pickup and drop-off.

Our course prices vary depending on the package you choose. Please refer to our Driver’s Education Packages section for detailed pricing information.

Yes, most insurance companies offer significant discounts for young drivers who have completed an approved driver’s education course. By state law, any driver under 26 who completes a drivers education course with the required 30 hours of classroom training combined with at least 6 hours of behind the wheel training with a licensed Driver Training school receives 10% off of their insurance for 3 years. This discount, alongside the discount that many students receive from the free defensive driving course included with each drivers education package results in an average savings of $1500-2000 over 3 years.

All of our packages satisfy the Joshua’s Law requirements and have the option of taking the drivers test with us. The primary difference is the amount of behind the wheel instruction time. Typically, the less you plan on practicing at home, the more time a student should spend with a licensed instructor. Please see our Driver’s Education Packages section for a more detailed comparison.

Once you’ve enrolled in a course, you can schedule your behind-the-wheel sessions through our online booking system or by calling our office. We offer flexible scheduling to fit your needs.

If you don’t pass the test on your first attempt, don’t worry. You can retake the test with us a second time at no additional charge. Before the second test, we will typically recommend reviewing the notes you received after your driving appointments from your instructors, or possibly scheduling additional sessions to help you prepare for your next attempt.
