Drivers Education – Joshua’s Law

What is Joshua’s Law?

Joshua’s Law requires teens who are seeking their initial Class-D drivers license to complete an approved Drivers Education course in the State of Georgia. This requirement came into effect in 2007.

How can I satisfy my students Joshua’s Law requirements?

There are two methods of completing a Joshua’s Law course:

30-Hour Joshua’s Law Course + Parent Teen Driving Guide

1

A student can complete a 30-hour Joshua’s Law course, followed by the completion of the Parent Teen Driving Guide, as well as a notarized, detailed 40-hour driving log. This completes the basic requirements of Joshua’s law without the discounts and savings of a traditional course.

Our 30-hour Joshua’s Law course includes the State required Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program. This has been incorporated into the drug and alcohol unit of Joshua’s Law and requires no additional obligation from parents or students.

30-Hour Joshua’s Law Course (Only Classroom): $135

Discounts/Savings:
  • Requires additional 6-hours of behind the wheel instruction.

30-Hour Joshua’s Law Course + 6 Hours of Behind the Wheel

2

A student can complete a 30-hour Joshua’s Law course followed by 6-hours of behind the wheel instruction in a school vehicle, one-on-one with a certified instructor. The 6-hours of behind the wheel driving replaces the Parent Teen Driving Guide, and while the student still needs 40 hours of supervised driving with a parent, they no longer need a notarized, detailed driving log.

This method makes the student eligible for a 10% insurance reduction from their insurance premiums, as well as a $150 tax credit back from the State of Georgia.

30/6 Drivers Education Course: $450

Discounts/Savings:

  • $150 State Tax Credit
  • 10% Off Insurance Premiums

With the tax credit and insurance discounts, this option pays for itself within 6-8 months for most families after adding a teen driver to their insurance policy.
